Porter Cable Drywall Sander Tips

Porter Cable - Quality & Innovation

Review
The Porter Cable drywall sander is currently a unique product in the sanding market. The engineers at Porter-Cable have really put together an impressive tool. It’s long enough to sand 10-foot ceilings from the ground, and lightweight, and able to vacuum up almost all of the fine, potentially harmful dust with a vacuum attached. Obviously this drywall sander impressed us right away. Drywall contractors everywhere are talking up this new tool. The 1-1/4-inch vacuum hose is 13 feet long, so a person can cover a lot of ground without having the move the vacuum. Simply put, this sander saves a tremendous amount of time (and countless muscle aches), while employing the same great sanding technology featured on other sanders made by Porter-Cable. It easily sands three times faster than hand-sanding–maybe even four times faster. And the end result is a large, smooth, uniform surface. Porter-Cable’s done very well with this sander–we predict tradesmen and homeowners will agree.

How To Tips
A drywall sander is an important tool of drywall installation. It is used to sand the plastering compound. This is one of the toughest phases of hanging drywall and it always messy and sometimes dangerous if not performed properly. Keep the following tips in mind so you to get the tool to work at it’s best on your next drywall project.

Tip #1 – Many people make the mistake of sanding after every coat of mud.  If the mud is applied properly this is not necessary or desirable. The sanding process should only be done once at the end of the third application of mud. Sanding after every coat can only add to the mess and make the process even more challenging.

Tip #2 – During the sanding process a lot of fine dust rises into the air so you have to make sure that you have safety goggles on to prevent the dust from entering your eye and causing irritation. It is also imperative that you use a mask with a ventilator while sanding in order to prevent the dust from being inhaled. Inhaling this dust can lead to permanent damage to the lungs.

Tip #3 – For the drywall sander to work effectively do not wet the sponge. Doing this is okay if you are sanding a small patch but if you are sanding a large arez just use the dry sander.

Tip #4 – While using the sander do not open the doors or windows for ventilation (though you may be tempted to do so because of the dust). Opening them will bring in air circulation but at the cost of raising the fine dust and causing more harm than good.  Using a sander with a vacuum connection will help keep the mess to a minimum.
